There’s something incredibly meaningful about phot

There’s something incredibly meaningful about photographing your best friend as she steps into motherhood. 💕🤰🏻

I’ve photographed so many beautiful maternity sessions over the years, but this one held an extra layer of emotion. This is my best friend of 22 years - and getting to document her in this season, glowing and strong and on the edge of everything changing, felt like such an honour.

And now that I’ve photographed her newborn session too? Watching her hold her baby in those early days after capturing her pregnancy… it’s the kind of full-circle moment that makes me pause and soak it all in.

We created these images at the stunning bedroom studio at @millworkscreative (RIP Hatt St location), leaning into soft light and moody, intimate tones - the kind that feel timeless and a little cinematic. Exactly the vibe we were dreaming of.

There’s something powerful about having someone who truly knows you behind the camera during a milestone like pregnancy and those first days with your baby. The trust runs deep. The moments feel effortless. And the images carry so much history.

I know it feels logical to wait until baby is actually here before booking your newborn session… but that “I’ll deal with it later” plan is exactly how so many parents miss out on securing the photographer they really wanted. Newborn sessions aren’t booked after baby arrives - they’re reserved months in advance around your due date. And those first few weeks? They go by in a blur. The last thing you’ll have energy to do is secure a quality photographer at the last minute.

1️⃣ Newborn photographers book months in advance. If you wait until baby arrives, your ideal photographer may not have room in that tiny 2–3 week window when those sleepy, snuggly images happen best.

2️⃣ You deserve a plan before you’re exhausted. The early postpartum days are tender and overwhelming. Booking ahead means your session is already scheduled around your due date - no scrambling while running on two hours of sleep.

Booking maternity photos isn’t just about hiring someone with a camera. It’s trusting someone during a season where your body feels different. Your emotions are heightened and everything feels tender.

Here are a few red flags to pay attention to:
🚩“All photos included” at a bargain price.
If everything is included without premium pricing, ask yourself how that’s sustainable. Time, skill, editing, and experience have value.

🚩 You send a deposit and they say, “See you at X location.”
No prep. No planning. No guidance.
You’re not hiring a meet up buddy - you’re hiring an expert. You should receive directions styling advice, location, support, and clear expectations.

🚩 They send Pinterest boards… but don’t show their own work.
Inspiration is great. But your Photographer’s portfolio should prove they can consistently create what you’re envisioning – in their own way.

🚩 They only send 3 to 5 “perfect” images.
Ask to see full galleries. You deserve consistency, not highlight reels.

🚩 No conversation about comfort, posing support or how you’re feeling in your body.
Pregnancy isn’t just a photo shoot it’s emotional. You should feel safe and supported.

The season is fleeting. You deserve more than “pretty photos.”
