How to Prepare for Your Maternity Session in Burlington

🛑 Stop going on Facebook groups asking for a photographer who “doesn’t charge an arm and a leg.”

First off - photographers don’t accept limbs as forms of payment. That’s gross, and frankly not taxable… 🤢

Second of all, nobody actually knows what you mean.

What may be “an arm and a leg” to you may be reasonable or cheap to someone else. As a result you’re gonna get every photographer under the sun throwing their hat in the ring- meaning you’ve just created more work for yourself because you get the joyful task of filtering through 750 comments and profiles...

Instead… state clearly “my budget is up to $xyz” and then the photographers who charge more won’t waste your time (and theirs). It’s okay if you have a smaller budget- there are people who can serve you! Just like if you have a higher budget - there are people who can serve you.

Will never tire of bringing families to @allwhowanderflowerfarm and photographing the looks of wonder that come across their faces as they discover the wonderland of the flower fields.

This mama and papa brought their daughter out to dance through the chamomile, bachelor’s buttons, and poppies, and it turned into pure joy: dad tossing her up in the air, all three of them laughing and moving together through the blooms.

In an environment like this, it’s a natural place for families to just let loose and have fun.

🚨 One of the biggest things that can make or break your photoshoot is not giving wardrobe enough consideration and throwing together whatever you can in the 11th hour.

DO NOT DO THIS!

Planning is key! You’ve taken the time to research photographers, find someone you like, hired them, invested time & money… don’t drop the ball in the final inning (or whatever sports analogy fits here - you know what I mean).

With photos that will hopefully become heirlooms in your family’s story, you want photos that will stand the test of time and that includes outfits that look well put together. The little details matter.

Make sure you’re following your photographer’s guidance - and if they haven’t provided any… well… 🤷🏻‍♀️ you can always book me next time… 🤪🤍

I don’t do mini sessions anymore. (Except at the holidays.)

Here’s why: kids don’t perform on command, and they shouldn’t have to. They need time to warm up, get comfortable, and forget the camera is even there. That’s when the real photos happen, the giggle fits, the silly dances, the way they still reach for you.

With over 10 years photographing families in Burlington and the Halton Region, I’ve learned that more time always means better photos. My specialty and full sessions both give your family room to breathe, connect, and just be yourselves.

Remember that time I was a terrible friend and life and business got in the way from keeping in touch? Only to hear from my friends 10 months later to find out they had added this precious duo to their family!

Cue the absolute shock and surprise (in the best way possible of course!) and there MAY or may not have been a HUGE squeal of delight - just ask my husband… he heard it!

And then ask him about the shriek of delight when mama asked me to do their newborn photos!!!

Every year I sit down and set goals for myself, so

Every year I sit down and set goals for myself, some practical, some a little bit wild.

And I can remember seeing the first or second GORGEOUS @lensandluxemagazine issues - since then - one of those goals has to have my work featured amongst all of the other incredibly inspiring and talented photographers in Lens & Luxe Magazine.

So getting to share that I’m one of four Luxe Spotlight photographers in the Botanica issue feels like something I still can’t quite believe. It’s the kind of full circle pinch-me moment that reminds me why I started this business almost a decade ago, and why I keep showing up for it, season after season.

None of this happens alone. Thank you to everyone who has believed in me, hired me, referred me, and cheered me on when I was still figuring out who I wanted to be behind the camera. This one is for you too. 💐

And to my partner in creativity and amazing friends @allwhowanderflowerfarm , thank you for being the stunning, ever blooming backdrop to so much of my work featured in this issue. Your fields have held so many of my favorite images, and honestly, so many of my favorite memories of doing this work. You inspire me every single time I’m welcomed into your home!
