When it comes to your maternity shoot, one of the most important things to think about is outfits and wardrobe – it’s also what tends to cause my clients the most anxiety. Trust me when I say, it causes me anxiety too.
But finding the right outfit doesn’t have to be stressful. Whether you’re choosing your own outfits or picking from a client closet, there are a few simple things you can keep in mind to make your selection easier. Keep reading to learn my top 7 tips for what to wear to your maternity shoot.
Let's Start with You
The easiest place to start when choosing wardrobe for your maternity shoot is with the star of the shoot – YOU! Your outfit should be the foundation of the overall look. You also deserve to be comfortable and confident in what you wear.
If you’re shooting with family members, choose your outfit first then coordinate your family member’s outfits around the colour and vibe of it. Trust me, picking everyone else’s outfits will be a walk in the park once you have yours as a starting point.
The Best Colour Palettes for Maternity Photos
While ultimately your colours are up to you, these are what I recommend simply because they photograph best and work with my editing style.
Neutrals, pastels and jewel tones are what I guide my clients towards. These are easier to coordinate, they’re very flattering and they go well with a variety of settings.
I usually advise against overly bright colours, loud prints and heavy black or white outfits.
Fabrics and Textures
It might not seem like this much attention to detail is important, but every little detail will contribute to the overall look of your photos. Fabrics can add a unique visual interest for example with ruffles, lace, chiffon or knits.
Each of these and other texture types can really add some depth and dimension to your photos.
Silhouettes: Flowy vs. Fitted
Flowy dresses are my go to when it comes to maternity dresses. They allow for some beautiful movement, they’re comfortable and they have a timeless elegance.
However, some clients prefer a more fitted look which can also make for stunning, stand-out photos. Dresses that are stretchy and hug your bump can really show off your body in this beautiful stage of pregnancy.
Do Undergarments Matter Too?
They sure do! Try to wear undergarments that won’t show through your outfit. Seamless and nude tones always work best to avoid lines and accidental guest appearances from your undergarments.
When trying on your outfit, try on the undergarments you’ll be wearing as well to check for bra straps, lines or visible shapewear.
The Little Details
When it comes to your accessories and the details of your look, I recommend minimal jewelry for a timeless look.
Be sure to remove hair ties, activity trackers and smartwatches prior to your session as these tend to take away from your look. Remind your family too!
Dad’s – make sure your pockets are also empty from things like keys, phones and wallets. Don’t worry, we’ll keep them safe during your shoot!
Pay attention to your footwear and socks as well in case they are visible during the shoot. Barefoot is always welcome!
My Client Closet: A Stress-Free Option
I LOVE having a client closet available for my clients (if you’re not in my area, consider looking for a photographer who also has one).
A client closet is a curated collection of maternity-friendly dresses. There are a variety of flattering fits and styles available that are sure to fit your vision for your shoot. You’ll also save time and money on shopping!
When you book your maternity shoot with me you have the option of having my client closet available to you, including a private try-on session to pick your favourite outfit.
Styling the Rest of the Family
Once you’ve chosen your own outfit and accessories, it’s time to plan styling for the rest of your family. Look for coordinating outfits over matching outfits – complementary colours will add to the look rather than choosing identical outfits and styles.
Adding layers can add depth and variety such as a button down shirt over a neutral t-shirt or a knit sweater over a dress. I’m also always available to my clients to guide them in choosing their family’s outfits as well.
The Most Important Thing
The number one thing to keep in mind when choosing your outfit is for you to feel confident and comfortable in whatever you’re wearing. You deserve to feel like your most beautiful self for your maternity photos – it’s your time to shine in front of the camera.
When planning your dream photoshoot ensure you’re working with a photographer who is experienced in helping you plan out your wardrobe.
